Grafted & Hewn grew out of my life as a broken creative- I'm Zachary Hanlon, and my search for spirituality and truth led me down many paths, including the study of geometry and the interplay of line, shape, and form. I was drawn to the order beneath things, patterns too precise to be accidental. Shortly after that exploration began, I had a powerful encounter with Jesus Christ that changed how I see life and myself forever.
He brought me from confusion to clarity, despair to hope, and death to life. I was dead in my sin, yet God's love broke through and brought me to life in him. Jesus is at the center of Grafted & Hewn because He is at the center of the new life I have been given.
The name, Grafted & Hewn, comes from Scripture. Paul writes of branches grafted into an olive tree (Romans 11:17), and Isaiah calls God's people to look to "the rock from which you were hewn" (Isaiah 51:1). Both describe what God did for me: cut me off from what I was and joined me to Himself.
That story shapes everything I make. I work with live-edge wood, leaving its natural grain and uneven edges as they grew, and engrave it with intentional geometric patterns and the truths and promises that flow from God's Word. The wood is a gift of God’s creation, and the engraved patterns are my response to the order and beauty with which He has adorned it. I want the beauty and richness of Jesus to shine through what I make: in the wood, the patterns, and the words they carry.
My desire is to create art that uplifts and encourages those who have found their hope in Jesus, and bears witness to Him for those who have yet to know Him. The invitation I extend is the one that was extended to me: repent, confess Jesus Christ as Lord, believe that God raised Him from the dead, and be saved (Romans 10:9). It is my hope and prayer that whoever encounters this work would be drawn to the One who inspires it, and find their life in Him.
